Danny Garcia Wins Tough, Entertaining Decision Over Zab Judah

Photo: Joe Camporeale/USA Today

Over 12 rounds, what many expected to be a foregone conclusion got interesting down the stretch, with Danny Garcia taking an unexpectedly close-ish and hard fought decision over Zab Judah at the $1 billion Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York Saturday night.

The action may not have quite lived up to the constant promise of blood at various pre-fight press conferences, and there weren't any street corner melees or stomp-outs, but fans got just about what they bargained for, plus an extra dash of salt from Judah.

In the live co-feature, Fernando Guerrero toughed out a good six-plus rounds against Peter Quillin before succumbing to the larger fighter's punching power.

Doth Not A Competitive Fight Make: Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah Preview

One of the more interesting things about the Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah bout this weekend, is that if you were to ask fans at random, you'd get varying answers as to whether or not the fight itself is all that interesting.

In many sporting realms, rivalries can serve to add interest to what is otherwise an drab match up. And if rivalries do indeed aid in rescuing sporting events from the world of the mundane, Garcia vs. Judah may prove to be salvageable in that regard.

Much of the bout's intrigue, if there was much to begin with, has been amplified by the constant feuding between Judah and both Danny Garcia and his father, Angel. Writer George Eliot said in "Middlemarch," her highly regarded novel dealing with social issues, "It's a father's duty to give his sons a fine chance." And indeed, it would seem to be the quirks and eccentricities of the fathers that have led the sons to the gate they now stand before.

Javier Fortuna Obliterates Miguel Zamudio In Just Over One Minute

Fortuna, left, catches Zamudio with a left hand

Those looking for a high quality Friday Night Fights card this week were looking in the wrong place tonight -- at least in the main event. What should have been recognized as a mismatch beforehand, indeed was, as featherweight Javier Fortuna took just over one minute to glue Miguel Zamudio to the canvas with a neck-wrenching left hand.

But for a fight card that propped up a mismatch in its main event, this FNF felt strangely satisfying, though admittedly it may have also been because many of us psychopath pugilism fans have been stricken with pathogenic anticipation for this weekend's action.

Sometimes fight cards that are in ways underwhelming can fill the emptiness with a sensational knockout, or even just decent moments from hard-working pugs.
